History of Galvanization of Steel

time2018/05/14

Galvanization is the use of chemical process to cover the steel with a layer of zinc. The idea of galvanization was born in 1770 however, the actual process of galvanization took place in 1830s. After twenty years of experiments, finally galvanized steel pipes are manufactured and being used in 1850s. Initially, the production of galvanized steel were concentrated only in Europe. Later in 1870, followed by United States. The first patent for the galvanization process was won by a French engineer in 1937.

Galvanized Steel are those steel that has been covered with a layer of zinc metal. During galvanization, steel is immersed in a molten zinc bath ensuring a tough uniform barrier coating. Zinc's natural corrosion resistance provides long-term protection to the steel pipes when it is exposed outdoor. Apart from preventing water corrosion, it is equally effective for dry indoor use.
