Working safely on scaffolding

time2018/07/08

Scaffolding provides a comfortable platform for working at height. But work safely on scaffolding involves some essential precautions to be taken.

STEP 1: SELECT THE TYPE OF SCAFFOLDING
There is scaffolding all shapes and sizes, the most common are:Scaffolding on wheels
Scaffolding PlatformThese scaffolds are equipped with wheels. They are therefore ideal for activities requiring high working platform is moved (painting, assembly, ...).The height of the scaffolding from a few meters to over 20 m.TrestlesFor indoor use, you can buy a removable or foldable scaffold platform. Be sure you know the desired height of your scaffolding and the size of the platform, because the range of choices is extensive.
Ladders and work platformAnother solution is to use trestles on which you place the boards. Most trestles are height adjustable, so you have a wide range. To tinker with very tall, this system does not work, but it is very convenient for masonry and carpentry in an average home.
Folding ladderYou can also make a scaffold by placing a plank between two ladders. If you have further telescopic ladders, you can easily work on surfaces with differences in levels. Such a construction is smaller and is not particularly practical. But if you have two scales, you do not need to rent scaffolding.
Modular ScaffoldingOther practical system: folding ladder with 3 joints allowing several positions, including creating a platform horizontally by placing the two central elements. Ideal for DIY home to an average height from the ground.

STEP 2: INSTALL THE SCAFFOLDINGThe highest scaffolding, for example working on a roof with several tens of meters, are made up of different elements that allow assembled to work at heights. The installation of this type of scaffold is a job for professionals.
Position the scaffolding on a flat, stable surface.
If the ground is soft, place a board under the feet of the scaffold to distribute the load so that the scaffold does not sink into the ground.
If it is a scaffolding on wheels, be sure to secure it so that it can not tip over. In practice, it is usually tighten the brake casters and stabilizing the scaffolding at each corner with metal stabilizers (supplied).
The boards must be properly secured. Make sure they are level, so that no tools or material slipping off the platform.
Always install railings.
Always attach the scaffolding as described by the manufacturer / rental company. Often, you must stabilize the scaffolding with metal bars placed diagonally.

STEP 3: WORKING ON SCAFFOLDING
Always mount the scaffold inside. To this end, the platform must be equipped with a shutter.Do not enter through the scaffolding bars placed diagonally.Do not overload the platform (already very small), but it only put the tools and materials needed.Hoist material with a bucket and a rope.Move the scaffolding when the need arises. It makes no sense to work on the scaffolding contorting you to run your task.Never exceed the maximum load of the scaffold.Wear protective clothing (gloves and safety shoes and helmet)
